Fuel Up for the Flu Season

H1N1 is out there and just about everywhere.  Are you ready for it? How can you improve your body’s ability to ward off the onset of the flu and if you get it, how long will it stay with you? I’m so glad you asked!  Here are Roadie Rules to Fight the Flu:

  1. Wash your hands regularly.  This is not the season to take this mantra lightly. Washing up is your best defense! Keep a bottle of hand sanitizer close by when you greet your fans.
  2. Increase your body’s natural immune system through foods high in antioxidants: fruits & veggies. Start your day off with a fruit and vegetable smoothie to increase your intake of Vitamins A, C, & E + the B vitamins. How many did you eat today?
  3. Drink plenty of fluids.  I vote for the brewed green tea variety or citrus-infused waters (just add a slice or two of your favorite citrus fruit to a cup of water). Note–the alcoholic kinds can decrease your body’s immunity.
  4. Get some sleep.  Your hours already have a mind of their own, so use your bus time to catch some zzzzz’s!  Keep your bunk area dark and use ear plugs to block out unwanted sounds.
  5. Consider some a little supplemental help.  The addition of 500mg of Vitamin C when you are on the road is a great way to focus on prevention!  If you start to get the onset of stomach distress I recommend probiotics to get your gut back on track.  Lastly, if your daily dining habits are less than optimal opt for a simple multiple vitamin/mineral to cover your bases.  There are a lot of unanswered questions out there regarding supplements; thus, it is always useful to seek out advice of a medical professional (perhaps those who are not selling you a product!)
  6. Last, moderate exercise can boost your immunity! If you push too hard, and go to an extreme you can actually weaken your system; thus, keep it steady and regular to the fight the flu bug!

Eat well, be well, and stay healthy!
