Fried Pickles, Fried Mushrooms, Fried Zucchini–Oh My!

funnel cakeThe Randy Rogers Band is heading to Louisiana next!  Here’s your hint where: Ahhh, Fair Food–fried mushrooms, fried pickles, fried zucchini, fried…fried….fried.  Yes, that sums the food up!  RRB is bound for Shreveport, LA and the State Fair.  It’s safe to say that fueling up on Fair Food will only lead you towards the nearest bathroom stall or to the hospital.  And, although the fried treats can be quite tasty they are definitely not great for your jeans, unless you like the unbuttoned look. If you are really craving some Fair Food then opt for sharing a basket of your favorite treat with the rest of your roadie pals, and avoid finishing the last bite!  Also, ditch the dip and you’ll save yourself at least 200+ calories.  For an idea of all the variety of foods they are serving up: http://www.statefairoflouisiana.com/exhibits_outdoor.aspx

So, you ditch the Fair Food and decide to go somewhere else. If you are looking for a nicer restaurant with Louisiana-flare then you may opt for Ernest’s Orleans Restaurant and Cocktail Lounge: http://www.ernestsorleans.com/  located at 1601 Spring Street. The menu continues to swing towards the deepfat-fryer, but choices can be made to enjoy the cuisine without the added guilt.

Roadie Nutritionist Top Picks:

  • Appetizer: Seafood Gumbo cup (request 1/2 the rice)
  • Salads: Spinach Salad, Asparagus, or the sliced Tomaotoes with Shrimp
  • Main Dish: Stick with seafood! Crab meat Orleans, Broiled Snapper or Trout–ask that the butter be served on the side or not at all
  • Dessert: Think of all the calories you saved above and opt to share a dessert amongst you and your friends and the Banana Fosters is a traditional treat down in Louisiana!
  • Beverages: Luzianne Ice Tea (unsweetened), sorry only Diet Coke available, or water. Hold off on the lemonade and full sugar sodas and you’ll easily save another 300+ calories!

Perhaps your trip won’t include something so decadent this time and you instead flip a U-turn for the nearest Mexican restaurant. Many would think that there is nothing one can eat at a Mexican Restaurant.  Untrue! 

Here are some quick tips to get you through your next “fast food” stop at Alberto’s, Miguel’s, or Roberto’s:

  • Get soft tacos, but get them with CORN tortillas instead of flour
  • Extra veggies please (the spicy carrots are not traditionally prepared with oil so load up!)
  • Whole beans are worth it over refried, saves you from the added fat (lard)
  • Only eat 1/2 your rice
  • Salsa is great, so get extra thick scoops on each chip so eat less of the fried chip and more of the nutrition from the salsa
  • Stick with iced tea, water, or diet soda and avoid drinks like Horchata (sugary rice milk)
